About 'vitamin d3 and weight loss'|High cholesterol, low vitamin D and its significance
Now that I am more than 6 years post-op, I haven't given thought to the list of necessary "must haves" after weight loss surgery in a while. The must-haves have either become "the routine" or they have been pushed to the back of the cabinets! So, it is time to refocus as we approach 2013! Besides, a New Year is time for resolutions, and I am resolving to work on losing the 30 pounds that have crept back after weight loss surgery. I have recommended some items below, mainly to provide an idea of what to look for! Some of the most important things after weight loss surgery for the must-have list: Smaller Plates and Utensils! Small Plates and small utensils are some of the most important items to obtain for life after weight loss surgery. The reason for using small plates is mainly psychological, but this practice can also be practical. Using small plates and utensils is a mind game, you will feel more satisfied if you are getting a full plate of food on a small plate versus getting a little food on a large plate. You are eating the same amount of food, but seeing it from a different perspective. Measure your portion onto your new small plates and make a note of how much food there is for future meals (should you be without a measuring device, you can eyeball it on occasion). After weight loss surgery, you need all the positive reinforcement you can muster in order to be successful! After weight loss surgery, a patient is instructed to take small bites and to chew thoroughly. Using a small forks and spoons (ones meant for toddlers, perhaps) will force you to put less on your fork and this practice will slow you down. I began attending a support group before my surgery- and I still attend this group today after weight loss surgery; I often hear that others have had struggles with eating fast in their preoperative lives and at times they struggle with slowing down their eating after weight loss surgery. You will also want to have a food scale and measuring cups/spoons readily available. Small food containers will be a godsend when you start packing your lunch and snacks to take to work. Consider a bento box; which will help you portion out your meals and is also a cute way to feel good about your portion sizes. Don't forget to recheck your portions at least once a week by weighing and measuring them; there is a tendency to eyeball them and they seem to grow over time. By doing the recheck of portions, you are ensuring that you are managing to keep your meals after weight loss surgery at a size that is recommended for success. After Weight loss surgery, be like a Boy Scout! How can life after weight loss surgery related to the Boy Scouts? The Scout Motto is: "Be prepared," which means you are always in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your duty. In the case of life after weight loss surgery, your duty is to respect your new tool and treat it properly. By keeping small, high-protein snacks with you, you are prepared for the spikes in the day where you need a boost. Some high protein snacks that are easy to carry include nuts, roasted chickpeas, roasted soybeans, SOME granola bars (read the labels and ask your dietician). Even though we eat 3 small meals (or other plan as each person's doctor is different when it comes to nutrition after weight loss surgery!), there are times when these are needed to keep everything in check between your blood sugar and alertness. Another good product to keep on hand are Ready to Drink Protein Shakes or Dry Protein powder packets that can be quickly blended into a shake using a blender bottle. At home, you can use a personal size blender (Such as the Magic Bullet) to add fruit to the shakes to make a satisfying treat. An after weight loss surgery strategy is to keep a few blender bottles and shake choices (or premade drinks) at your desk or in your car. Instead of driving to the nearest fast food outlet after weight loss surgery, because you have nothing with you and you are feeling tired, you can whip out your blender bottle and make a healthy shake, versus sipping on that calorie-laden, preservative filled demon from the drive through! After weight loss surgery, there are SO MANY vitamins to keep up with! Biotin, D3, B12, Multi-Vitamin, Iron, Calcium…UGH! How can someone keep up with all of these vitamins that we are instructed to take after weight loss surgery to maintain health and avoid the complications of malabsorption relative to our chosen surgery? Simple answer: Get a weekly pill organizer large enough to hold your pills, preferably one that has compartments for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Bedtime, etc. This way, you can separate your iron from your calcium, pre-schedule the times to take certain vitamins, and most of all, NOT FORGET to take them every day. I find this a struggle on weekends, and without a vitamin box, I know I am missing my daily regimin at times. Some people also add flaxseed and/or fiber supplements to aid in digestion. You can prefill containers with the daily portions of these additional supplements to ensure you take them daily after weight loss surgery. Plus, they are ready to go, and you can grab them as you are running out the door to add to your cup of Greek yogurt for breakfast! Finally, after weight loss surgery, it is important to be cognizant of your daily intake! Websites and phone applications are available that can track your food intake, daily weight, and daily exercise. These applications are excellent tools to assist you with staying on track after weight loss surgery. FitDay.com is one of the best apps available today, where you can enter a custom food as well as choose from many standard foods that are already in the database. Once you begin using this app, you can keep track of your progress and weight ups/downs. You can analyze trends in your caloric intake or with a stall in weight loss. Your surgeon may ask you to report in with a food diary- if you are using this application, you will already have the requested information readily available to print. FitDay also has a built in support system because it allows users to friend each other and offers support boards. |
